Kist Bank is not in crisis: NRB
Nepal Rastra Bank has clarified that Kist Bank Limited does not have any financial crisis.
This comes a day after the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police arrested Kist CEO Bal Narsingh Gharti and officials Pragun Shrestha and Manjay Raj Pandey for interrogation in the charge of banking fraud.
The central bank officials have said that the bank’s financial condition is “balanced” and that it is functioning smoothly as new officiating executives have already taken over.
NRB’s latest statement is a relief to the shareholders and other stakeholders in the commercial bank that had posted a slight loss of Rs.8.94 crore in the 4th quarter of the last fiscal year 2069/70.
It is yet to publish its first quarterly report for the current fiscal year.
In July the CIB had charged 16 people, including the former CEO of Kist Bank and Siddhartha Development Bank, for their involvement in a banking fraud.
The CIB had charged former CEO of Kist Dipendra Karki with loan fraud.
The bureau has also filed cases against other people accusing them of irregularities while issuing the loan.
Kishor Dhakal, who received the loan, Gauri Gyawali, the wife of the then Kist Bank CEO Kamal Prasad Gyawali who received the money from Dhakal, Shekhar Aryal, the chairman of Siddhartha Development Bank, Madhusudan Silwal, a former director of Siddhartha, and Komananda Adhikari, the government engineer who evaluated the land used as collateral for issuing the loan have all been arrested.
After the police arrested Gauri Gyawali on the charge of banking fraud and fingers pointing at him also, an embattled Kamal Prasad Gyawali had resigned from the post of CEO of and its operator.
Following Gyawali’s resignation the Bank had appointed Bal Narsimha Gharti as its CEO.
Gyawali's wife was arrested for her involvement in a multi-million rupee scam on business loans from the Siddhartha Development Bank.

At a time when Nepal Rastra Bank is pressing the Bank of Kathmandu (BoK) and Himalayan Bank (HBL) to repay counter guarantee to Melamchi drinking water project, the two banks have become more vulnerable after the stay order issued by a court to withhold payment to the project expired on Thursday.
The BoK had issued guarantee, risk losing US $6.62 million and Euro 1.4 million to pay as counter guarantee amount to MWSDB after their client — China Railway 15 Bureau Group Corporation — failed to complete the construction of the tunnel of MWSDB.
Likewise, Himalayan Bank stands to lose $6.6 million for guarantee made for the Chinese contractor’s performance bond.
The two banks could not extend the stay order after the hearing on the case was incidentally divided between two benches on Thursday, and the court then went on to adjourn the hearing for Sunday.
After the Chinese party fled three months ago, the Melamchi Water Supply Development Board (MWSDB) has been pressing the BoK and the Himalayan Bank to clear the due.
The problem for these two banks increased after the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) started to grill the bank officials on the case.
Following this, the central bank, which seemed a little soft toward these two banks in the initial days, started to toughen its stance on them, and have even directed them to pay back counter guarantee amount by November 13.
Then the two commercial banks had moved the appellate court to withhold payments.
As MWSDB continue to press the two banks for immediate payment, they have sought an interim order from the Kathmandu District Court and then from the Appellate Court Patan that allows them to make payment to the Melamchi project only after the Chinese company pays back.
The two commercial banks are in an apparent crisis after the Chinese company declined to make the payment, citing “a local court order”.
This has been a matter of concern for the shareholders of the two banks.
It may be noted here that the banks and the shareholders had heaved a sigh of relief after Nepal Rastra Bank last month approved 14 percent bonus shares proposed by the BoK to its shareholders from the net profit it earned last fiscal year.
Meanwhile, MWSDB has decided to evaluate the construction work carried out by China Railway 15 Bureau Group Corporation at the Melamchi project site.
This is part of the MWSDB’s plan to seek compensation for the losses caused due to the delay of the project due to the Chinese company.
The evaluation process is being carried out with the help of the new contractor CMC Cooperativa Muratori e Cementisti di Ravenna of Italy and the project consultant Poyry Infra Company of Finland.

Johara International
Cricket Association is organising a tournament in Kritipur scheduled December
2-7. The tournamet is going to be organised as a practice match for Nepal
National Cricket Team to prepare for ICC ODI Worldcup Qualifiers in Newzealand.
The tournament is
named as "Sagarmatha Cement Journey To Worldcup". Four teams
will compete in that tournament. Singapore National Cricket Team, Nepal
National Cricekt Team and two clubs from India will participate in that
tournament. Indian clubs are Air India and Delhi Wonders. It is learned that
Indian clubs will send their first choice team. These two Indian clubs consists
of some IPL players and Ranji Players. Nepal will play in the home ground after
six months long gap.
This time fans will have to pay for tickets to watch the
game live. Ticket prices are set as, Rs 200 for normal and Rs 1000 for VIP
seats. It is said that the 25% of the collected money from ticket will be
provided for Nepali players as their game fees.
